Airlines arriving later in June, vineyards in the clouds, rent a bike at the airport

Airlines running late so far in 2014

More airlines arrived late in June compared to the month before.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said Thursday that among airlines reporting figures, 71.8 percent of domestic flights arrived on time in June, down from 76.9 percent the month before and 71.9 percent in June 2013. A flight counts as late if it arrives more than 14 minutes behind schedule.

Vineyards in the clouds: wine behind the scenes at Delta Air Lines

Sitting in a conference room at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, bottles of wines are sitting on a table. It’s up to Master Sommelier Andrea Immer Robinson to pick the ones that will be served to Delta’s Business Elite class passengers in 2015.

The wines are grouped according to specifications such as Sauvignon Blancs from the US there, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blends from France here, classic Spanish reds over there. But you get the sense that Robinson’s been filling in the spaces in between (in her head, at least) for the past year, as she’s tasted and built relationships with wineries around the world.

Airport boring? Rent a bike and ride around it.

If you’ve got a long layover at BWI and you don’t want to be bored, rent a bike and ride around the perimeter.

The 12.5-mile airport loop is a regular route for area cyclists, and it’s surprisingly scenic when compared to the surroundings of many big airports. BWI has joined with Zagster, which provides turnkey bikesharing, to provide 10 bikes just outside the international terminal.
