New MGM Vegas Strip venture, FAA to review hazards, Detroit’s restroom for pets

Head of MGM explains new venture on Las Vegas Strip

Last April we told you about the new park and promenade that MGM Resorts will build. MGM CEO Jim Murren sat down with 8 News Now to talk about the project.

It is called The Park, and it will connect New York-New York and Monte Carlo with MGM’s new arena.

“The Park will be a preeminent gathering place for tourists and locals here in Las Vegas,” Murren said.

Murren says the park will be an interactive neighborhood environment. The area between New York-New York and Monte Carlo will be transformed into a “robust plaza environment.” The park includes eateries, bars and retail, all leading up to a 20,000 seat arena.

FAA to review hazards in airspace near airport runways

The FAA is reviewing the airspace near busy runways that could interfere with safe operations of an aircraft should it have an engine failure during takeoff.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Friday in the Federal Register that it is planning a major shift in policy that would “protect airspace for emergency operations when an aircraft engine fails during departure.”

Aircraft experiencing engine problems might not climb at the normal rate and, as a result, would require a more obstacle-free airspace. Structures near an airport could pose a safety risk

Detroit Airport puts a pet restroom right in the terminal

People with service animals won’t have to step outside when their guide dog has to do his or her business at Detroit Metropolitan airport.

Over in the McNamara Terminal — the one with all the Delta traffic — airport officials have set up what they’re calling Central Bark Animal Relief Area. Basically it’s a restroom for service dogs complete with a couple patches of grass, as well as a fire hydrant to set the mood.

Service animals are free to do their thing, and there’s even a button on the wall to help rinse away their business.
