What we’re reading: Fun beyond Vegas, United and union avoid layoffs, 757 replacement

Fun in Nevada – beyond Las Vegas

If you’re not a big gambler, you can easily tire of the glamour and glitter of the Las Vegas Strip. For a change of scenery, why not try out these other activities outside of Las Vegas?

The Great Reno Balloon Race

The Great Reno Balloon Race is the world’s largest free hot-air balloon event. It attracts specialty balloons in shapes such as Darth Vader and the Energiser Bunny. Held over a weekend in September, every morning about 100 hot-air balloons rise up to take part in the mass ascension as the sun comes up over the Virginia Range.

United Airlines, union strike deal to avert about 700 layoffs

United Airlines and one of its unions reached a deal that avoided an April 1 layoff of 700 flight attendants.

The agreement ensures that “no flight attendant is forced out on the street without a paycheck,” Veda Shook, Association of Flight Attendants International president, said in a statement.

Boeing ponders transcontinental plane to replace 757

Boeing is gauging whether airlines are looking for a replacement of the narrowbody 757.

A mid-range aircraft would fill a gap left when Boeing’s 757, the longest single-aisle airliner, went out of production in 2004. U.S. transcontinental service includes the New York-to-Los Angeles trips prized by airlines because of the demand for premium seats, and Airbus Group NV (AIR) is trying to win orders by extending the range of its A321.
