Airline baggage stats: More checked bags mishandled more often

Despite checked bag fees, travelers continue to check bags. This results in more bags mishandled in 2013 compared with 2012.

While checked bags per passenger at airport ticket counters increased to 0.677 in 2013, up from 0.668 in 2012, the number of mishandled bags on domestic flights in 2013 spiked from around 2.9 per 1,000 customers in 2012 to 3.22 in 2013, A4A [Airlines for America] stated.

United Airlines unveils new hangar at Newark Liberty

United Airlines unveiled a new widebody hangar at Newark Liberty Airport last Thursday.

The carrier invested $35 million to build the 90,000-square-foot (27,432-square-meter) hangar, which will be used to house and perform maintenance on widebody aircraft that United plans to put into operation in 2018.

JetBlue links Charleston, Hartford, and Nassau with Reagan National in D.C.

JetBlue announced three new routes from Reagan National in Washington, DC.

Starting June 19, the New York-based airline will offer non-stop service to Charleston, South Carolina; Hartford, Connecticut; and Nassau, Bahamas, from Reagan National. The new routes are part of the airline’s plan to offer 30 departures from Reagan National by the end of the year. The carrier will also add a second flight from Washington to Tampa, Florida, starting July 2, 2014.
