What we’re reading: United’s furloughed employees plan, Delta — ATW Airline of the Year, Harry Potter’s new theme park

United to offer furloughed crew new-hire positions

Flight attendants that were laid off by United Continental Holdings can re-apply as new hires at what was once Continental Airlines. The flight attendants were on the United Airlines side.

While United and Continental merged in 2010, flight attendants from the two airlines still operate under separate labor agreements and from separate seniority lists.

United says that those employees who are laid off and take a position with Continental will retain seniority for purposes of pay and vacation time but will be at the bottom of the Continental seniority list when it comes to bidding for flights and time off.

Delta Air Lines is 2014 ATW Airline of the Year

Air Transport World has named Delta Air Lines its 2014 Airline of the Year, the first time a US carrier has gotten that honor in a decade.

Other winners of the 40th Airline Industry Achievement Awards include Etihad Airways (Market Leadership), WestJet (Value Airline of the Year), SkyWest (Regional Airline of the Year), JetBlue Airways (Technology Leadership) and Singapore Changi Airport (Airport of the Year).

First look: Harry Potter’s new theme park

This summer, Universal Orlando will open the doors to the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley.

Once inside the elaborately themed area, which has been in the works since the summer of 2010, guests will feel like they’ve stepped onto the London film set, complete with the popular wizarding pub The Leaky Cauldron, several iconic shops and a marquee roller coaster-type attraction based on Gringotts, the goblin-run bank from the series.
